St Pauli fans celebrate first home win over Hamburg in 59 years with incredible pyro display

It's Monday night football like you've never seen it before.

A landmark moment in one of Germany's greatest rivalries, St Pauli recorded their first home win over rivals Hamburg in 59 years to spark wild celebrations.

A Dimitris Diamantakos header and a Rick van Drongelen own goal sealed the historic victory, the club's first since the 1960s, amid a sea of smoke and pyro at the Millerntor Stadion.

St Pauli's victory also denied Hamburg the opportunity to take top spot in the 2.Bundesliga.

Diamantakos rose to head home in the 18th minute before van Drongelen turned into his own net just after the hour mark.

As the game raged on, the home fans inside the 30,000 capacity arena let off flares and shot fireworks into the air in an impressive display - not what we're used to seeing on a Monday evening in the Premier League .

Away fans responded with a display of their own but the occasion belonged to St Pauli.

The two clubs were reunited in Germany's second tier in 2018 following Hamburg's relegation.

They had, until then, not met since 2011.

Last season's encounter on St Pauli's turf ended in a painful 4-0 defeat for the hosts, in which Scotland defender David Bates played for Hamburg.

You can watch the rousing display in the video player above.
