St Paul's man convicted of robbery after chance encounter at Dad's Cabs

A St Paul's man has been sentenced after mugging a person who he said owed him money.

Toyan Young came across Junior Bent outside Dad's Cabs in Grosenor Road in August last year.

Bristol Crown Court heard they argued before Young struck him three times and took his jacket, keys and cash.

Young, 29, of Dermot Street, denied wrongdoing but a jury convicted him of robbery after a trial in February.

On Thursday, July 16, the recorder Mr Timothy Kenefick handed him an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He told Young: "You were struggling with depression and bereavement at the time.

"You lost your temper.

"That, of course, is no excuse for the way that you behaved.

"I recognise you are sorry for what you did."

Young was also handed 42 hours' of rehabilitation with 150 hours' unpaid work.

He was made the subject of a two-year restraining order banning him from contact with Mr Bent.

'It appeared he would never get his money'

Caighli Taylor, prosecuting, said the jury acquitted Young of threatening Mr Bent with a blade.

She said Mr Bent was struck with significant force and sustained a cut to his left ear which had to be glued.

Nicholas Clough, defending, said his client had invested in Mr Bent's catering business but was owed money by him.

Mr Clough told the court: "He came across Mr Bent by accident.

"He asked quite forcefully if he would be paid the money and he got excuses.

"It appeared he would never get his money.

"He accepts he lost his temper."

The court heard it was Young's first conviction for robbery and Mr Clough urged for either a community penalty or a suspended jail term.
