St Patrick's Day 2020: Where are all the parades in Dublin and what time are they on at?

Not too long left to go until St Patrick’s Day as thousands of people are expected to descend upon Dublin to celebrate.

This year’s St Patrick’s Day festival will be taking place from March 13 to 17.

There are plenty of exciting festivities planned including the biggest event - Dublin city’s St Patrick’s Day Parade.

But there are plenty of smaller local parades taking place so you don’t have to go all the way into town.

Here’s a list of Paddy's Day parades taking place in Dublin on March 17:

Dublin City

The high point of the festivities, the Dublin city parade will start at Parnell Square, heading into O’Connell Street, crossing the bridge and going into Dame Street before ending at Wexford Street, just before St Stephen’s Green.

Clondalkin

The Clondalkin parade will be an extra bit special as this year’s grand marshall is Colombian pup Uimhir a Dó (or Uimhy)!

Uimhy was rescued by locals Keith Ward and Fiona Barry from a pet shop in Bogota in October.

The couple said: “Uimhy was rescued from a glass box, without food and water in a cruel pet shop in Bogota, Colombia in October.

“We discovered both her and her sister while backpacking through South America. Sadly due to their prior mistreatment both of them contracted the deadly Parvo virus.

“Uimhy’s sister, Gracie, sadly didn’t survive, however with the help of so many generous donations, many from Clondalkin, we were able to get Uimhy back to Ireland. She now leads a happy and safe life in Clondalkin with us.”

The parade will start from Old Nangor Road, before heading towards Orchard Road, down to Main Street, and up Tower Road again.

Tallaght

The event will start at 1.30 pm from IT Tallaght gates down the Old Blessington Road , turning left at The Dragon, continuing down Main Strett, turning left onto the Greenhills Road and finally turning left back into the college grounds.

Malahide

This year’s Malahide parade will start at 12 pm from Beach Car Park, go up by the tennis courts along the mall, turning into New Street, and finish at the Green.

ST PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRATIONS KICKING OFF IN TEMPLE BAR, DUBLIN

Swords

The Swords event will begin at 11 am from The Christian Brothers School, just past Eddie Rockets and the parade will go down the Main Street and end at Swords Castle.

The Main Street will stay closed from Swords Castle to Malahide Road after the parade is over.

Skerries

This north Dublin seaside town has a particularly special connection to St Patrick’s Day as the patron saint lived on a small island just off Skerries after being expelled from Wicklow.

The legend goes when St Patrick visited the town to convert the locals, some residents went to the island to steal his goat which was later cooked and eaten.

When they were confronted by St Patrick they found that they could only bleat. But their voices returned when they decided to tell him the truth.

While the story was seen as a shame on the town for hundreds of years, the locals have come to embrace it.

Now the parade is led by a fully costumed St Patrick who is ceremoniously presented with a goat outside St Patrick's Church to replace the one killed 1600 years ago.

The Skerries parade starts at 3pm and proceeds from the South Strand, down Strand Street (the main street) to Skerries Mills.

Blanchardstown

The parade starts at 2 pm on the Castleknock Road before going along Main St, onto Snugborough Road, and finishing at the Blanchardstown Town Centre.

Balbriggan

The Balbriggan parade starts at 2 pm starting at Garda station, going all around Dublin Road before finishing at St Peter's and Paul's church.

Rush

Starting at 1 pm, the Rush parade goes from Main Street to Harbour Road.

Lusk

The Lusk parade kicks off at 1.30 pm and goes all around the village.,

Stepaside

Coronavirus fears have caused a St Patrick's Day parade to be cancelled in Stepaside.

The Stepaside Business Association have made the decision to cancel the beloved event in the interest of public health and safety.

The choice was made today in response to the growing numbers of COVID-19 in the country.
