St Pat’s striker Mikey Drennan facing another three game ban

Mikey Drennan is facing a three game ban - for the second time this season.

The St Pat’s striker was sent off in the dying stages of Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Dundalk after receiving two yellow cards in the space of a minute for dissent.

It is believed the first one was for rushing towards referee Rob Hennessey in the aftermath of a foul on Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers.

And a moment later, he was shown a second yellow card for something he said.

Saints boss Harry Kenny said: “He’ll get another ban. He just has to watch himself and you can’t be letting people down.

“We were on the up at that stage. We were creating half chances and it took the steam out of things when you drop a player.”

In April, Drennan was hit with an additional two match suspension on top of the automatic one game ban having been shown a straight red for dissent against Bohs.

In February, the FAI said it was adopting a new zero tolerance approach in an attempt to protect match officials.

It was agreed that players who use “foul, insulting or abusive language towards an official could be slapped with at least three games.

And in that game against Bohs, referee Rob Rogers referenced aggressive behaviour on Drennan’s part in his report.

Managers and captains of all clubs were briefed on the new changes before the start of the season.

Among the other sanctions approved were 12-game bans for players or managers who “deliberately place a hand on or brush against” a match official.

Kenny was frustrated to lose on Saturday but insists he was happy with his team’s performance.

“We didn’t create a whole lot of chances but we held our own for long stretches in the game - they didn’t create a whole pile,” he said.

New striker Glen McAuley was not available but Kenny hopes to have the Liverpool academy recruit available for Friday’s clash with Cork City.
