St Mirren vow to fight SPFL charge as Buddies issue defiant statement over Covid protocol probe

Defiant St Mirren have vowed to fight against an SPFL probe into their coronavirus protocols.

The Buddies have been hit hard by Covid-19 this season with a number of positive tests at the club.

Premiership clashes with Hamilton and Motherwell have been postponed and an early season defeat to Hibs was plunged into chaos after Saints had three goalkeepers ruled out 24 hours prior to kick-off.

The club have since appointed a safeguarding manager and risk professional to help strengthen their in-house measures.

But the Paisley club still face an investigation over recent outbreaks and have declared they will defend themselves.

A statement said: "Following the SPFL decision to proceed with disciplinary proceedings against St Mirren, St Mirren can confirm they will defend this robustly."

The charge against Saints will now be subject to a hearing on November 10-11, the SPFL have confirmed.

A league statement said: "The SPFL has today announced that disciplinary proceedings have been commenced against St Mirren FC.

"It is alleged that St Mirren FC breached the SPFL’s Covid-19 regulations during the lead-up to their postponed league matches v Motherwell FC on Saturday 17 October and v Hamilton Academical FC on Saturday 24 October.

"The St Mirren hearing will be held before a sub-committee of the board of the SPFL, chaired by an independent legally-qualified chair, on Tuesday 10 and/or Wednesday 11 November.

"The previously announced disciplinary hearing in relation to Kilmarnock FC will be held on Tuesday 10 November and now may also extend into Wednesday 11 November."

As stated, top-flight rivals Kilmarnock currently face a similar inquiry after being accused of breaching Covid rules.

Their scheduled match with Motherwell was called off earlier in October due to an outbreak which forced their entire first-team squad into self-isolation.

Killie, too, have promised to contest the charge.
