St Mirren star Keanu Baccus helps Australia reach World Cup last 16 after incredible win over Denmark

St Mirren star Keanu Baccus’ dream World Cup trip to Qatar will reach a new level after he helped Australia topple Denmark to incredibly seal a last 16 spot.

The Socceroos knew a win against the much-fancied Danes would see them qualify out of their group for the first time since 2006.

Having come on as a late substitute in Australia’s first two matches against France and Tunisia, Baccus was hoping to be involved again in his country’s do-or-die clash in Doha.

And with the scores level at half-time, head coach Graham Arnold decided to introduce the hard-working 24-year-old into the heart of his midfield as they looked to battle past Denmark.

The Aussies returned from the break with a Paisley spring in their step, with Melbourne City striker Matthew Leckie scoring a fantastic solo effort to put them in front.

St Mirren midfielder Baccus and his teammates worked tremendously hard to keep a clean sheet and earn all three points, with Australia now heading into the last 16 where they will face the winners of Group C.

That could yet be football legend Lionel Messi’s Argentina, with Poland and Saudi Arabia also potential opponents depending on how this evening’s results pan out.
