St Mirren signing Matt Millar reveals Scottish connection as he targets Dundee United debut

New St Mirren recruit Matt Millar is hoping he can make an immediate impact for his new side this weekend.

The 25-year-old has joined the Buddies on a one-year deal after he left Australian A-League side Newcastle Jets.

The attacking Australian right back arrived in Paisley on Monday and is hoping to prove himself worthy of a debut showing against Dundee United at the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday.

He also revealed his Scottish roots which helped sway his decision to move to the country.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Millar said: "I know Scotland pretty well because my grandparents were born in Glasgow and my parents lived in Glasgow.

"I was really excited when St Mirren came in for me and I just want to hit the ground running.

"I’ve got a lot of pace and I like to get up and down the wing.

"I’m also a very competitive person so you’ll definitely see that.

"Hopefully I have a good week of training and can be in a position to have some impact this weekend."

Millar, who can also play on the right hand side of midfield, has played for Central Coast Mariners and South Melbourne during his career in Australia having come through the Melbourne City youth ranks.

He has also spent time in the UK already, having enjoyed a loan with English League One side Shrewsbury Town last season.

The English side were keen to hold on to the wide man, but were unable to negotiate a deal with Newcastle Jets meaning he returned back to his homeland in January.

Saints boss Jim Goodwin has been on the hunt for wide players after losing Ilkay Durmus and Dylan Connolly during the summer transfer window, with the pacey wingers often filling in as wing backs in the manager's preferred 3-5-2 formation.

With summer recruit Scott Tanser impressing on the left wing so far since joining from St Johnstone, Richard Tait and Jay Henderson have both been used as right wing backs so far this season.

Millar will give Goodwin another option on the right flank, and he added: "We’re delighted to get Matt in.

"I had spoken to his agent around six or seven weeks ago, but we thought he was going to go to an English team.

"That didn’t happen and the fact he was still available made it a really easy one.

"He’ll bring a bit of pace and power to the team.

"He’s a good type that’s played at a decent level and I’ve no doubt that he’ll fit in well with the group."
