St Mirren set to earn huge windfall if John McGinn makes big money move from Aston Villa

St Mirren stand to net a tidy seven-figure windfall should former star midfielder John McGinn bag a massive move to Liverpool.

The Aston Villa star, who played all three of Scotland’s Euro 2020 group matches, is firmly on Jurgen Klopp’s radar as he looks to replace outgoing Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Buddies inserted a sell-on clause if Hibs were ever to sell their former academy product, and that stands to net them a healthy profit should a big transfer fee be agreed for McGinn.

Villa currently value the 26-year-old at £50 million, and should that huge fee be agreed with any prospective club Hibs are set to bag 15 per cent of that total - a cool £7.5 million.

However, the Saints are due a further 30 per cent of the Edinburgh side’s earnings, which would see the Buddies due around £2.25 million from Jack Ross’ side.

Posting on social media after Scotland’s Euro 2020 dream ended, McGinn said: “We fell short in the end but having the opportunity to represent Scotland at a major tournament in front of my family is something that I will never forget.

“The overwhelming support from the whole country has been an inspiration and I’m hoping this is just the beginning for us.”
