St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin clarifies reason behind Jack Baird's loan extension at Morton

Saints manager Jim Goodwin has revealed why Jack Baird will stay at Greenock Morton until the end of the season.

St Mirren confirmed that the 23-year-old youth academy product’s loan spell has been extended until the end of the current campaign.

And Goodwin told Express Sport there simply wasn’t space in his current first team for another centre back, with Cork City defender Conor McCarthy and Norwich City prospect Akin Famewo joining up in the current transfer window.

He said: “Jack Baird has done well at Morton so far and I’ve still got Gary MacKenzie and Kirk Broadfoot to come back from injury.

“With Conor McCarthy coming in and another one following him on loan, that would simply be too many centre halves.

“Five would be too many and I’ve already got other players who can fill in that position if required, as shown over the last few months.”
