St Mirren look set to appoint Jim Goodwin as the new Buddies boss

Jim Goodwin is set to be appointed St Mirren manager after the Buddies were granted permission to speak to their League Cup winning captain.

It is understood that barring any last-minute hitches the current Alloa Athletic boss will be the man to replace Oran Kearney, whose departure was confirmed yesterday.

Saints last night held talks with Goodwin and could confirm his arrival as early as today.

The 37-year-old would be the popular choice with the St Mirren support after cementing his spot as a club legend during his playing days.

Goodwin, signed from Hamilton Accies in 2011, went on to captain the club during a successful five-year spell which included the famous 2013 League Cup triumph over Hearts at Hampden.

He eventually left Saints in 2016 to join Jack Ross’ Alloa Athletic as a player/coach before taking over the reins when Ross left to become Buddies boss.

His managerial stock is on the rise after achieving promotion with the Wasps in his first full-season in charge before keeping the part-timers in the Championship against all odds last season.
