St Mirren handed Premier Sports Cup win as Dumbarton forfeit opening game

St Mirren have been handed a walkover win at the start of their Premier Sports Cup campaign after a Dumbarton player tested positive for coronavirus.

The Buddies were set to take on the Sons in their first competitive fixture of the 2021/22 season tomorrow afternoon at the C&G Systems Stadium.

But tonight Dumbarton confirmed to the SPFL they wouldn't have enough players for the tie after one of their player's caught the virus.

They have now followed in Ross County's footsteps in having to forfeit their opening Premier Sports Cup clash, with the Saints now enjoying a free weekend before taking on Dunfermline in Paisley next Tuesday night.

A St Mirren spokesperson said: "The SPFL Board has awarded a 3-0 win to St Mirren in Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup tie against Dumbarton, after the League One side informed the SPFL that they are unable to fulfil the fixture.

"Dumbarton informed the SPFL that a player had tested positive for COVID-19 and, as a result of close contacts and player injuries, they do not have sufficient players available to fulfil the fixture.

"St Mirren Football Club would like to wish the affected player all the very best in his recovery."
