St Mirren: Former academy kid Kyle Magennis is new team captain

By Kyle Gunn

St Mirren midfielder Kyle Magennis has been installed as club captain.

PAISLEY DAILY EXPRESS: Live news as it happens

The 21-year-old, who takes over the honour from Stephen McGinn after he left the Paisley side at the end of his contract, is currently recovering from cruciate ligament damage and newly vice-captain Sam Foley, below, will wear the armband in his absence.

Gaffer Jim Goodwin, who was a League Cup-winning skipper, is full of praise for academy graduate Magennis as a leader on the pitch and off.

He said: “Kyle will be captain and we’ll just carry it on like we did last year.

“Obviously, Kyle is going to miss the start of the season, so while he is out, Sam Foley will wear the armband.

“It will just be very similar to last year.

“Kyle is a fantastic young player. He knows the club inside out, and he knows what the club means to the fans.

“I’m not going to take the armband off him, that’s for sure.

“He’s earned the right, as far as I’m concerned, to be captain.

“He’s a top professional, he leads by example and he came through the academy here.

“He deserves that opportunity to be club captain and Sam will be vice-captain.

“And, while Kyle is not available for the start of the season, Sam will be captain during that period.”

There will, once again, be a big turnover at St Mirren this summer with no fewer than 14 players leaving the club.

However, Saints have also kicked off their recruitment drive with both former Motherwell defender Richard Tait and ex-Rangers keeper Jak Alnwick signing two-year deals within the last week.

Goodwin has indicated that more additions to his Buddies squad could be confirmed in the near future.

He added: “We hope to have at least another one done this week.

“And we are working hard on another two or three.

“Hopefully, there will be some more news in the coming days.”
