St Mirren defender Conor McCarthy thanks mum Esther for keeping biscuit tin under lock and key

Defender Conor McCarthy has thanked his mum Esther for keeping him trim while on lockdown – by keeping the biscuit tin off limits.

The St Mirren stopper has been given a fitness programme to follow like all his Buddies while he anxiously awaits the return to action.

Having returned home to Cork, he is keeping fit in his local park but paid tribute to his mum for making sure he sticks to a healthy diet.

“I am actually really disciplined,” McCarthy, who is also in the final weeks of an economics degree course, told PA Sport.

“I have to thank my mother at home for that.

"She realised I can’t be eating tins of biscuits so she generally doesn’t bring them into the house.

“Whatever I say I can’t eat, she has been really on top of her game so I have to thank her for that.

"If I was on my own in Scotland I think it would be different.

“Obviously there is no set days for when the season starts up but I think most footballers will be disciplined in that respect.

"We know we have to look after ourselves and that is part of the job.”
