St Mirren close in on Irish duo as Jim Goodwin set to get January transfer business started

The Saints are close to announcing their first two signings of the January transfer window.

Manager Jim Goodwin has been working hard to strengthen his side ahead of the second half of the season, with both defence and attack needing reinforcements.

And he looks to have managed that with Dundalk attacking midfielder Jamie McGrath and Cork City centre back Conor McCarthy set to sign on at the Simple Digital Arena.

Both have experience in European football with their respective sides, and Goodwin believes the pair will quickly become fan favourites.

He said: "If we get this one (McCarthy) over the line it will be a terrific signing.

"He's physical, strong, quick and tidy on the ball.

"Hopefully there will be a more news in the next couple of days.

"We need a couple of defenders and some cover in the attacking positions."

McGrath is set to move over in a free transfer, while McCarthy will command a small fee worth around £30,000.
