St Mirren close in on former Aberdeen defender Joe Shaughnessy

St Mirren look set to make their third signing of the summer after fending off interest from Kilmarnock for former Aberdeen defender Joe Shaugnessy.

The 27-year-old former St Johnstone captain is close to linking up with fellow Irishman Jim Goodwin after being released by English League Two side Southend Utd this afternoon.

He would join ex-Motherwell full back Richard Tait and former Newcastle and Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick in switching to Paisley ahead of next season.

Shaughnessy made over 50 appearances for the Dons, enjoying loan spells at Falkirk and Forfar Athletic as he continued his development.

He then became a stalwart for St Johnstone, turning out nearly 150 times for the Perth side and eventually taking over the captain's armband from Steven Anderson.

Last season he was part of the Southend United squad that was relegated from League One.

The Buddies are also understood to have missed out on Notts County midfielder Mitch Rose.

The midfielder considered an offer but has decided to turn that down for family reasons.
