St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin slams yellow card decision that spared Aberdeen keeper Joe Lewis

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin is adamant Aberdeen keeper Joe Lewis should have seen red for his cynical challenge on Jon Obika.

Despite not making a clear attempt to get the ball, referee Steven McLean decided against sending Lewis off.

Goodwin said: “It’s a massive talking point because it makes a difference, purely because of the fact that he’s a top keeper.

“No disrespect to their second choice keeper but Lewis makes a good save.

“You could say it’s a poor penalty and we should do better with the follow up.

“I like the introduction of the new law in the game. We see too often goalkeepers making genuine attempts to stop a ball with their hands, missing slightly and then getting sent off. I don’t want to see that.

“My understanding of the new law when I went to the meeting was that if it’s not a genuine attempt for the ball, he’s got to go. So for me, he’s got to go.

“If Jon gets around him he’s going to score. He’s one of the top keepers in the country, so if we’re going to bring these laws in then lets use them properly.”

St Mirren return to Paisley on Wednesday night when they take on Motherwell at the Simple Digital Arena.
