St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin insists plastic Palmerston pitch was a "leveller" for Queens

Jim Goodwin believes Queen of the South ’s plastic pitch was a “leveller” and played a part in his side’s troubles on Saturday.

The Buddies struggled to adapt to the new surface and found themselves behind early as the hosts raced into a two-goal lead.

The St Mirren gaffer believes his side can still take confidence from their second-half turnaround though, and for picking up five of a possible six points in their opening two Betfred Cup games.

Goodwin said: “Credit to Queen of the South, they started the game really well. We knew the pitch would be a bit of a leveller as it's very sticky.

“We played into Queens’ hands early on and the two goals come from our mistakes.

“We gave away possession on the far side trying to play it short when the pitch doesn’t allow for that.

“But I have to give credit to my players for the second half performance as we were well in control.

"We’ll take it. We’re sitting on five points after two games and are top of the group.”
