St Mirren ask SPFL to postpone Celtic and Rangers clashes as covid outbreak deepens

St Mirren are in last ditch talks with SPFL chiefs to have Wednesday's Premiership clash with Celtic postponed after their covid outbreak deepened on Tuesday morning.

And the virus-struck Paisley club also want Sunday's trip to face Rangers called off.

The Buddies looked set to go ahead with tomorrow's fixture despite only having 10 first team outfielders and three goalkeepers available with the remainder isolating.

But further positive tests this morning have led to a situation where St Mirren say they are unable to field a team.

Jim Goodwin cancelled his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

And a statement from the Paisley club said: "St Mirren Football Club can confirm that it has requested postponements of our upcoming cinch Premiership matches against Celtic and Rangers following further positive covid tests.

"We have tried our utmost to fulfil the fixture, however, following further positive covid cases this morning we are unable to field a team for either match with a significant number of first-team players and staff unavailable.

"The health and wellbeing of our players and staff remains our utmost priority and we will continue to take every precaution necessary.

"We are in continued discussions with the SPFL and we will keep supporters updated as we look for a resolution to this matter."
