St Mirren 2 Dunfermline 3 as Jim Goodwin suffers Betfred Cup shock in first Buddies match - 3 talking points

Dunfermline pulled off a shock victory over St Mirren in a Betfred Cup thriller in Paisley.

First half goals from Ryan Dow, Andy  Ryan and Tom Beadling gave Stevie Crawford’s men all three points.

Jim Goodwin, however, will need to wait for his first win in charge of the Buddies despite pulling two goals back through Cody Cooke and Danny Mullen.

Saints welcomed the Pars to the Simple Digital Arena in the Group H opener, a game which saw, former League Cup winning captain Goodwin, take charge of his first competitive game as manager since replacing Oran Kearney.

Meanwhile, Crawford has been busy in the transfer market bringing in the likes of experienced midfielder Paton from Falkirk and striker Kevin Nesbit who scored 34 goals in 46 games for Raith in League One last season, as they gear up for another season in the Championship.

It was even in terms of chances until 18 minutes when Ryan Dow slotted beyond Hladky to give Dunfermline the lead..

It got even better for the Pars just six minutes later as Andy Ryan crashed home a second to stun the home crowd.

Tom Beadling added third before the break after Andy Ryan hit the post.

Quick fire goals in the second half from Cooke and Mullen brought Saints back into a match they were seemingly out of but it wasn’t to be in the end and Goodwin's side have been left to lick their wounds.

Stevie's joy

Crawford will be delighted with as his side shocked St Mirren with a stunning display that included three first-half strikes. Goals from Dow, Ryan and Beadling earned the Pars all three points in a commanding display as they got their season off to the perfect start. They will be looking to consolidate the win against Albion Rovers at East End Park on Wednesday night.

Work to do for Jim

Goodwin will be frustrated by the fact he was unable to get a win in his first game in charge. The Irishman watched on as the Buddies suffered a poor defeat in a far from ideal start to his tenure as boss. It's something he and the squad will be desperate to put right by beating Edinburgh City, again at the Simple Digital Arena, on Wednesday night.

Ryan runs the show

Andy Ryan was a thorn in the side of the St Mirren defence all day long. Chasing defenders and linking up well with new strike partner Kevin Nesbit. The former Airdrie hit man scored one and hit the post before Tom Beadling added the third.
