St Mirren 1 St Johnstone 1 as Danny Mullen screamer keeps Buddies rescue bid alive - 3 talking points

A stunning strike from Danny Mullen rescued St Mirren an invaluable point against St Johnstone to keep their Premiership survival bid alive.

Chris Kane gave Tommy Wright’s team the lead with 11 minutes remaining but former Livi striker Mullen’s effort kep the Buddies seven points ahead of Dundee and within two of Hamilton Accies.

Oran Kearney’s men came into the game full of confidence after coming from behind to beat 10-man Livingston 3-1 last weekend.

Meanwhile, Wright’s side got back to winning ways by comfortably beating the Dens Park outfit last Saturday thanks to second half goals from Scott Tanser and Callum Hendry.

It was even opening 20 minutes at the Simple Digital Arena with few clear cut chances before for either side.

Mateo Muzek was the first to threaten for the hosts and he had a powerful effort turned round the post by Zander Clark.

St Johnstone responded through Murray Davidson as he broke into the box but sent his effort wide of the target.

The first-half was permeated with robust challenges as neither side were able to make a breakthrough.

Anders Dreyer’s wide free kick was the closest the hosts came to an opener - his delivery evaded everyone and struck the post to the anguish of the home crowd.

The second half was again littered with hard challenges and few openings as the sides contested a real war of attrition in Paisley.

Finally, on the 79-minute mark, Kane slide home to deliver a hammer blow to St Mirren and silence the Buddies faithful.

But an absolutely stunning strike from Mullen in the final minute of stoppage salvaged the hosts a priceless point.

Today’s draw means that St Mirren are unbeaten in three games and stretches the gap on bottom side Dundee to seven points. But the Buddies failure, once again, to win back to back league games means that they couldn’t leapfrog former assistant manager Brian Rice’s Hamilton who currently occupy 10th position.

Consistently inconsistent

Saturday's draw is another frustration in a largely inconsistent campaign for Tommy Wright’s men who haven’t won back to back league games since December, against bottom the two St Mirren and Dundee, and they have now also lost their 100 per cent record in the Scottish Premiership against their Paisley opponents this season.

Mullen's the man

That’s two weeks in a row that Mullen has scored important goals in the Buddies fight for survival after getting the second against former employers Livi last weekend.

And if he can continue to get the goals for the Kearney’s side he will be a massive player in the run in for the Paisley club.
