St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay to be lit up in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore

A coastal landmark will be lit up in memory of national hero Captain Sir Tom Moore.

St Mary’s Lighthouse, in Whitley Bay, will turn blue from Wednesday night until Sunday, February 3 to 7, in honour of the war veteran.

The 100-year-old died on Tuesday after battling pneumonia and testing positive for coronavirus.

Sir Tom raised more than £32m for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his milestone birthday – initially setting out to raise £1,000 – and was then knighted by the Queen in July.

North Tyneside Council is also flying its flags at half-mast as the country mourns the war hero's death.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: "Captain Sir Thomas Moore was a beacon of light and hope during such a difficult time for the whole country.

"He captured the nation’s hearts with his incredible and inspirational fundraising – he was a true hero and the very best of us.

"His lifetime of service to our country – including his courageous efforts during the Second World War – will never be forgotten.

"We share our deepest condolences and sympathies with his family and loved ones."

People are also being urged to join in a nationwide clap in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore at 6pm on Wednesday.
