It’s a story that will hit home with Queensland audiences. David Burton’s play follows the story of Father Kennedy and his ousting from St Mary’s church in South Brisbane. Kennedy was dismissed in 2009 after he was accused of changing words in liturgies, supporting female preachers, and allowing a gay and lesbian choir to rehearse on church grounds.
The play begins as Father Kennedy, who refused to resign or fall in line with orthodoxy, packs his things for exile. He’s stopped by a young homeless visitor who walks into his building, wanting to know more about this unconventional holy man.
Directed by Jason Klarwein, the play looks at what drove this man to defy the powerful Catholic authority, and tells the story of the tight-knit church group who continue to meet in exile every weekend.
