St Louise's Comprehensive College in Belfast will now admit boys

A Belfast all-girls comprehensive school is now accepting boys.

St Louise's Comprehensive College, on the Falls Road in the city, will now welcome boys into Year 8 as well as reducing its capacity from 2,280 to 1,500.

The school, which is one of the largest for girls in Europe, is making the changes as part of an overhaul of Catholic education.

Soaring student numbers means Northern Ireland needs almost 300 new classrooms, study shows

The proposal was approved in 2017 and will now be implemented in September 2019.

The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools confirmed that St Louise’s Comprehensive College is implementing the Development Proposal 507 in full.

The Education Authority admissions criteria for the school now lists it as co-educational. It also reveals boys will only be admitted in Year 8, and at Post 16, specifying the phased integration of boys.
