St Julian's School in Newport closes for second time in less than a week due to sickness

A high school has closed for the second time in less than a week due to "unprecedented" levels of staff sickness.

St Julian's School in Newport closed to staff and pupils on Wednesday following a decision by its chair of governors.

Senior staff said they are currently unable to operate the school safely due to levels of staff sickness being at an unprecedented level.

The school closed on Friday, December 6 following an outbreak of sickness and diarrhoea among staff and students.

Arrangements for Thursday will be reviewed throughout the day with a decision expected to be shared by 3pm on Wednesday.

A statement posted on the school's website says: "Due to levels of staff sickness being at an unprecedented level, we are currently unable to operate the school safely.

"Therefore in full consultation with the local authority, the chair of governors has made the decision to close the school tomorrow (Wednesday) for all staff and students.

"This will be reviewed throughout Wednesday; a decision will be made regarding arrangements for Thursday and shared by 3pm."

What is the difference between cold and flu?

St Julian's has a student population of about 1,500 primarily from Eveswell, Glan Usk, Maindee and St Julian's primary schools.

Last week, 82 pupils and seven staff members were absent from Marlborough Primary School in Cardiff, forcing the school to close.

Ysgol Bro Myrddin in Carmarthshire was also forced to close after an outbreak led to almost 200 pupils being off sick.
