St Johnstone WFC produce "complete performance" to defeat Queen's Park in Perth

St Johnstone WFC manager Jason McCrindle watched his players produce a “complete performance” to defeat Queen's Park.

The Perth side, who returned to their McDiarmid Park home for the first time this season, ran out 3-0 winners on Sunday afternoon.

Scottish youth internationalist Rebecca McGowan opened the scoring following a quick counter attack just after the half hour mark.

Striker Ellie May Cowie then doubled the advantage with a looping shot over the goalkeeper as the half-time whistle approached.

There was no sign of Saints shutting up shop at the beginning of the second half and instead McGowan quickly added a third.

McCrindle was delighted with the response following back-to-back league defeats.

And he said: “I thought we were magnificent.  I would call it the complete performance.

“We had three outstanding goals, a clean sheet and the work rate was there.  We deserved the victory against a very good side.

“We had spoken about the previous two results and know that we need to maintain standards.

“When we drop below those standards we get what we deserve out of a game, which is nothing.

“But the girls bounced back and were positive.  When they play like that, they are capable of beating anybody.”

While netting three goals was pleasing, the determination to keep a clean sheet was equally satisfying for Perth management.

“Anyone who was there would see how determined the girls were not to concede after losing sloppy goals last week,” McCrindle explained.

“They were throwing their bodies on the line and our goalkeeper was in good form as well.

“Throughout the team, we worked hard.  I can’t single anyone out because it was a complete team performance.”

Saints handed a Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 debut to youngster Abbie Ferguson, who has joined on loan from Celtic.

McCrindle said: “We know Abbie well and she was previously with the youth teams at Jeanfield.

“With her Celtic team not being able to train and play, it’s good to get her involved.  We’re glad to help out.

“The front two who started were excellent so she had big shoes to fill. But Abbie and Fern [Newbigging] came on and worked well together.”
