St Johnstone star jokes that 'cup double' tipsters would've been 'led away'

Craig Bryson admits anybody who tipped St Johnstone to win the Betfred and Scottish Cup double would have been ‘led away’, but says that has to be their target.

The McDiarmid Park club already have the League Cup tucked away in their trophy cabinet and on Sunday knocked Rangers out to set up a semi-final against St Mirren.

Bryson says both Rangers and Celtic exiting the competition makes it more difficult, rather than easier, with everybody now having an equal chance of lifting the famous old trophy.

He’s not looking any further ahead than that trip to Hampden next month, but Bryson admits it would be an astonishing achievement for the Perth club to win both domestic cups.

Bryson said: “I still think it’s going to be very tough and it’s going to be very competitive now.

“I know everybody says it, but we do actually have a lot of confidence.

“If somebody said at the start of the season that St Johnstone would do the cup double I think they’d probably get led away, to be honest with you.

“You’re obviously in the cup, you’re in it to win it, and that’s an old cliché in sport, but it’s one of those; we’re going back to the Betfred Cup, and even in the group stages we were playing the strongest team possible when we were away to Kelty Hearts and at home to Brechin and stuff like that.

“We were still trying to win the game, still playing a very strong team, and it has been no different.

“We played a very strong team against Clyde [in the third round] and managed to beat them, and you see what we’ve just done to Rangers.

“We’ve taken the league and both cups very seriously this season, and I think we’re getting our rewards for that.”
