St Johnstone Galatasaray heroics won't leave them vulnerable, says Well boss

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander says he expects St Johnstone to be fit and ready for their showdown on Sunday, despite the Perth side's heroics in securing a 1-1 draw at Galatasaray in their Europa League qualifier.

Alexander says he will focus on what Motherwell will do at McDiarmid Park, and while he expects a tough test from Callum Davidson's Saints, he anticipates similar steel from his own side.

But he says Motherwell must improve on their 3-2 opening day defeat at home to Hibs last Sunday.

"We have to focus on what we can do," he said.

"Every professional football team is fit and prepared, and disciplined and organised, so we won't expect anything different from St Johnstone on Sunday - what we would be expecting, anyway.

"We'll take the positives from what we did last week against Hibs, but there were elements of the game that we have to improve on as well, which we know, week in week out.

"We're a new team, there's plenty of progress to be made, so we try to do that on the training pitch, but obviously when it comes to match-days.

Alexander says the Steelmen are working hard to fix problems that led to a 3-2 defeat at home to Hibs last Sunday (SNS Group)

"I watched the majority of their game and I think St Johnstone put in a typical St Johnstone performance [in Turkey].

"They were extremely hard to break down, they carried their threats at important times and it was a fantastic result from them.

"St Johnstone have proved over the last 12 months what a good team they are, so we will be expecting a tough game, as we do. We're in the Premiership, there are no easy games, but we expect to give them a tough game as well.

"We're looking forward to it."

Alexander added: "For us, we want to go and try to win the game, but St Johnstone have had a real consistency and settled side for a long time. If you look at their team it doesn't change that much, because the manager obviously has great confidence in that group of players.

"We've obviously had a bit more of a turn-around over the summer, we're a new team coming together, but we want to attack teams, score goals, and we want to take risks, but there is a balance to that and we have to get that right.

"We don't want to be an attacking team that concedes lots of goals, we want to win games, and do it in a way that excites the fans - but I also understand the importance of clean sheets and being defensively strong."
