St Johnstone demand SPFL investigation into Dundee United call-off as Saints chief calls for answers

Disappointed St Johnstone have demanded an investigation into why the club's Saturday afternoon kick-off was postponed with under two hours' notice.

The Saints made the Tayside trip to Tannadice to face Dundee United but had to turn around and head home after a pitch inspection from referee Colin Steven at 1.15pm ahead of the 3pm kick-off.

The away side fully expected the ground's undersoil heating to remedy the frozen pitch issue.

The SPFL rescheduled the match later in the afternoon and it's now pencilled in for a 6.30pm kick-off on Tuesday, January 12.

But the visitors weren't satisfied and the Perth club's head of football operations Kirsten Robertson highlighted their concern.

She told the BBC : "It's been far from ideal. With Dundee United having undersoil heating, we expected the fixture to go ahead.

"We now fully expect the SPFL to look into why it was such a late call off."

The game was one of a plethora of matches that fell foul to an overnight big freeze with temperatures plummeting below -10 degrees celsius in parts of the country.

Five Scottish Cup ties were postponed on Saturday but Dundee's second round home clash against Bonnyrigg Rose - just 200 yards from Tannadice - is set to go ahead as planned at 7.45pm.
