St Johns Shopping Centre 'stormed by Trading Standards officers' seizing counterfeit clothes and handbags

Trading Standards officers reportedly stormed St Johns Shopping Centre today in pursuit of counterfeit clothes and handbags.

The ECHO understand that officers paid a visit to the precinct part of the shopping centre this morning after they received a tip off from a third party about the alleged sale of counterfeit goods.

A total of five stores are believed to have been visited by the inspectors, who seized a number of materials from the retailers.

The ECHO contacted Liverpool Council for comment but officials declined to comment.

A spokesperson said: "We would not comment on ongoing investigations."

The ECHO also contacted St Johns Shopping Centre but it declined to comment.

St Johns Shopping Centre has been in the spotlight recently for its success after figures showed its stores are making millions of pounds more in sales than last year .

The privately-owned centre, which is celebrating its 50th year this year, has reported that sales at its stores are up £3.5m for the first seven months of 2019 compared with the same period last year.

Customers also spend an average of 43 minutes there - over three-quarters of visitors buying a product or service.

St Johns Shopping Centre is separate from the council-run St Johns Market housed within the centre, which as the ECHO has previously reported,  continues to struggle  following a controversial revamp.

St Johns is Liverpool's largest covered shopping centre and home to the likes of Aldi, Wilko, Poundland, and JD Sports, as well as more than 100 independent retailers.
