St James' Swifts confirm high-profile signing of Kevin Braniff

St James' Swifts have completed the high-profile signing of Kevin Braniff.

Braniff has agreed a move from Lisburn Distillery and will be eligible for the Ballymena Premier Intermediate league side from January 1.

The 36-year-old joined the Whites in July following his release from Portadown, and is now on the move once again.

The former Glenavon and Ballymena United forward is another marquee signing for St James' after the arrival of former Cliftonville midfielder Ryan Catney in the summer.

"We are delighted to secure the signing of Kevin," said St James' Swifts coach Barry Johnston.

"Once we identified Kevin as a target we opened talks with Distillery boss Stephen Hatfield who was brilliant throughout.

"We are excited about the signing. Kevin brings so much quality and experience to the club, and he is hungry to succeed.

"We outlined what our club wants to achieve and he bought into it. We are ambitious, and so is Kevin.

"Kevin is a player I always wanted to play alongside, and now I have chance to work with him in my coaching capacity."

Johnston hopes Braniff's Irish League experience can rub off on the club's younger players.

He said the impact of Catney's arrival lifted the performance levels of the team by "three or four notches".

Johnston added: "You notice everything go up a level, from training to match days.

"People said Ryan was going to come here for an easy retirement route. But he has shown the same intensity and hunger as he did when we played together at Cliftonville.

"Kevin is the same character. He knows he won't be coming here for an easy ride. He wants to do well and wants the team to succeed.

"Hopefully that little bit of extra quality and experience can lift the team even further."
