St James's Hospital in 'dire need' of masks, gloves, and gowns as coronavirus crisis worsens

St James’s Hospital in Dublin has issued a desperate appeal for masks and other protective equipment as the coronavirus crisis worsens.

Staff fighting on the frontline of the epidemic are calling on the pharmaceutical and food industries to send them personal protective equipment including gloves, gowns, and masks, Dublin Live reports.

It comes as it emerged 283 healthcare workers nationwide have tested positive for Covid-19 so far.

In an urgent appeal on social media, consultant respiratory physician Dr Anne Marie McLaughlin said: “If you work in the pharma or food industry and have personal protective equipment we need them.

“I guarantee they will be used by our frontline staff.”

That's according to the latest 1,164 notified cases recorded as of midnight on Monday by the HSPC.

Cork has the second highest amount of patients with 133, Galway is next with 40 and Wicklow has the fourth most cases with 39.

But the Department of Health on Wednesday revealed the total number of cases in the Republic rose to 1,564.

This figure is correct as of 1pm on Wednesday following the announcement of 235 new cases - the country's highest daily increase so far.
