St Helens restaurants, pubs and takeaways with a one-star food hygiene rating in 2021

Out of all the restaurants, pubs and takeaways in St Helens, five have been given one of the lowest ratings possible by the Food Standards Agency.

Each establishment receives its rating following an inspection conducted by a food safety officer from the council.

A one star food hygiene is one step up from a zero star and the ratings means that major improvement is necessary. If they are given a five rating, the highest, it means hygiene standards are “very good”.

A total of five establishments in St Helens have fallen foul of the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) food hygiene rating scheme this year and have been given one star food hygiene.

The ECHO approached all five businesses and asked for a comment on the reasons behind their recent rating, any improvements made or feedback from customers.

How is the scoring done?

The scores are done by local authority hygiene teams. A health officer will look at three criteria types during an inspection:

  • How hygienically the food is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.
  • The cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation of the building.
  • How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe.

"As a result of re-registering the business, as we are required to do, as Marston’s is now the ‘Food Business Operator’, we anticipate the local authority will change the rating to ‘awaiting inspection’ until they have conducted its first visit.

"Whenever this inspection is completed, it is our goal to achieve 5 star Food Hygiene Rating."
