St Helens Council local election results 2019 - as they happen

People across St Helens are voting for who they want to be in charge of their local area.

Seats on St Helens Council are up for grabs across 16 wards, with all five major parties represented as well as two independent candidates.

The current make-up of the council is Labour (41), Liberal Democrat (3), Conservative (3) and independent (1).

As only a third of seats are up for election, the council will remain Labour-controlled no matter what the result.

Just before the election, St Helen's Council Leader Derek Long made the shock announcement that he will stand aside after the vote, regardless of what happens.

Already four candidates - Marlene Quinn, David Baines, Jeanie Bell and John Wiseman - have put themselves forward to replace him.

Declarations of results could be expected as early as 1am.

We will be bringing you the full results as soon as we get them through the night - and you can follow all the live action with us.
