St Giles' Cathedral to be filled with more than 400 lanterns for Chinese New Year

St Giles' Cathedral will be filled with hundreds of lanterns as part of a spectacular display for Chinese New Year.

The artwork is part of the Burns & Beyond festival in Edinburgh, as the beginning of the Year of the Rat coincides with the National Bard's birthday.

An enchanting canopy of more than lanterns will be decorate the historic cathedral from Wednesday, January 22 until Saturday, February 1.

The display will be set to music to create a unique atmosphere. It follows the popular Museum of the Moon exhibition at St Giles' last year.

A seven-metre wide glowing replica of the moon was placed inside the Royal Mile cathedral.

The Burns & Beyond festival say: "Following last year’s spectacular presentation of Luke Jerram’s ‘Museum of the Moon’ and in celebration of Burns Night and Chinese New Year falling on the 25th January, a stunning Chinese lantern installation has been created to transform Edinburgh’s famous St Giles’ Cathedral with a canopy of over 400 lanterns.

"An evening illumination and soundtrack will create a spectacular sensory experience along with a programme of daytime and evening performance and events."

Tickets are £5 and you can find out more here.
