The plunging temperatures of the past week has seen demand for warm clothing increase dramatically, a leading organisation has said.
And St George's Crypt today made an appeal for donations of warm clothing, toiletries and other donations to meet demand.
The Crypt, which offers a range of services to the city's homeless, said it was coping but that staff were working extra hours and demands on services were on the up.
Chief executive Chris Fields said:
"We are certainly not turning people away but we do need more help. If people would like to donate what we need is warm clothing, clean underwear and toiletries. And, of course, donations."In the severe weather the Crypt has risen to the challenge; staff stayed longer hours so that the needs of the homeless were met.
"But with temperatures very low, we have been a lot busier as more people need hot food and shelter.
"We even opened up to the general public, those who were stranded when most of the snow hit last week."
The Crypt is also working with local authorities to ensure that shelter is available and due to the demand there will be extra six beds at the Crypt until March. Fields added:
"People should look out for the homeless in Leeds. If you see a homeless person in need, send them straight to us at the Crypt."
St George's Crypt in Leeds is a Christian charity which has been working to providing hope and support for the hundreds who access the charity's services every week since the founder Don Robins first opened the doors in 1930 and welcomed people into the Crypt.
