St Fagans national museum to reopen outdoors from August 4 as other museums headed for phased re-openings

Some of the biggest and most popular museums across Wales will soon re-open.

All of the sites owned by National Museum Wales were forced to close for months after the coronavirus pandemic hit.

But as cases continue to drop and Wales slowly begins to ease lockdown measures, museums will gradually welcome back visitors in the coming weeks.

St Fagans near Cardiff will be the first museum open their doors on Tuesday August 4.

All visitors must book their free visit in advance online to help manage numbers. Visitors are also asked to wear face coverings.

St Fagans will be open every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday with pre-booking.

The historical buildings and galleries at St Fagans will remain closed at present due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Other regular features such as the cafe and other areas of the museum will also be closed.

All other museums will be opening with pre-booking and limited days on these dates:

National Slate Museum – Sunday August 23

National Museum Cardiff – Thursday August 27

National Waterfront Museum – Friday August 28

Big Pit National Coal Museum – Tuesday September 1

National Roman Legion Museum - Wednesday September 2

National Wool Museum – Thursday September 3

A number of measures will be in place, including pre-booking, social distancing signs, one-way systems and more cleaning.

David Anderson, Director General of Amgueddfa Cymru, said: “We’re all looking forward to welcoming our visitors back to our national museums. Although our buildings were closed, we have been open online over the last four months, providing learning resources for schools, art to field hospitals, and solace and inspiration for everyone.

"Museums play a key role in the health and wellbeing of people and communities and I hope everyone will come back out to visit us and support us."

He added: "During the closures we have had a fantastic response to our ‘Collecting Covid’ project asking the people of Wales to be part of the story by sharing their experiences and feelings of living in Wales during pandemic. This will form an important record for future generations.”
