St Cuthbert Wanderers start South of Scotland League season with 3-0 win over Dumfries YMCA

Three first-half goals gave St Cuthbert Wanderers victory over Dumfries YMCA on the opening day of the season.

Elliot Harris scored a brace and Danny Bryson was also on target as new boss Jordan Williamson started his reign with three points.

He said: “I was happy enough. I think a lot of people had us as favourites — and the squad we have is so new and fresh and competitive games are completely different to friendlies — so there were a bit of nerves but the players coped with them well.

“We played well, we got three points and a clean sheet so I’m happy wth that. We had four players missing — two on holiday and two suspended — so it’s a good way to start the season.

“We did have the ball in the net twice in the second half. It just didn’t count as it was offside.

It was a bit of a dead rubber. There were a lot of changes from both sides and I was keen to give everyone some game time.”

Last night, Saints were due to face Creetown in the league and on Saturday they’ll head to Moffat to face Upper Annandale in the League Cup.

Williamson said: “I think both games will be pretty similar. They are both quite direct, even in the summer when the grass parks are in good condition and it’ll be a bit more physical.

“We’ll work on some things in training and hopefully we can get three points and cup progress.”

•St Cuthbert Wanderers would like to pass on their wishes to Dumfries YMCA committee member Jim Gracie, who took ill at the end of Saturday’s game.

Fellow committee member, Blair Crossan, said: “I’m glad to see he got back home on Monday. He just took a wee turn at the end of the game.

“I’d like to thank St Cuthberts for all their help, it is much appreciated.

“Their committee were really helpful while we waited for the ambulance to arrive.”
