St Cuthbert Wanderers sign two more players to put spine of team in place

St Cuthbert Wanderers manager Jordan Williamson says the spine of his team is now in place following two more signings.

Goalie Jake Gemmell has joined the Kirkcudbright side after leaving Threave Rovers while midfielder Sam McConaghie has signed a permanent deal after spending part of last season on loan from Dalbeattie Star.

They join ex Motherwell striker Greg Pollock and former Huddersfield youngster Cameron Taylor in making summer moves to St Mary’s Park.

Williamson said: “It’s great to have Jake in and it’s been a long time coming.

“The quality he has is worth at least 10 or 20 points a season. Getting someone of his calibre in is a big boost. He has been a Carlisle United academy player, he came through the youth teams at Annan and he went on to play some first team games.

“He has the mentality and mindset that we are looking to bring to the club.

“We had Sam on loan for the first half of last season and as his confidence grew he was starting to do well. Then his loan spell ended and Dalbeattie didn’t renew it.

“I said to him at the time we’d love to have him back permanently if the opportunity ever arose.

“He’s got no qualms about him. Everything we ask him to do at training he tries to implement and replicate.”

With the bulk of the side in place, Williamson has not ruled out further additions ahead of the start of the South of Scotland League season.

He said: “It gives us a squad of 22 and there’s scope for one or two more.

“We’re happy with the squad at the moment and are confident it can push us further up the table, which is the aim but, like everyone else, if the opportunity arises to bring someone else in that can improve the quality then we’ll look at them.”
