St Cuthbert Wanderers gaffer reckons side have been handed tough start to South of Scotland League season

St Cuthbert Wanderers gaffer Jordan Williamson reckons his side have been handed a tough start to the season.

Although they start with Newton Stewart at Kirkcudbright, they then face three away games to Mid Annandale, Stranraer and Lochmaben.

Williamson said: “It’s good to have a home start and we’re looking for three points there.

“However, looking at it as a whole it’s a difficult start for us.

“We need to hit the ground running against Newton Stewart as after that it’s three away games with three very different challenges.

“Mids is always a high place, it’s always a very high intensity game and they’re often up at the top of the league.

“Stranraer is the benchmark game and then we’re at Lochmaben which is our first game on grass and they will look to use that to their advantage.

“It’s at the end of October, beginning of November and that’s just when the weather is starting to change so hopefully the park is OK.”

Although First Minister Nicola Sturgeon recently announced new coronavirus restrictions, Williamson is hopeful that fans will be allowed into St Mary’s Park by the time the season opener rolls around on October 10.

He added: “The first game is still nearly four weeks away.

“Hopefully that would allow us to have some supporters in with social distancing in place.

“It would mean a lot to the club and it would be great for the supporters to come in to see the changes that we have been making on and off the park.”
