St Cuthbert Wanderers eye cup glory after making Tweedie Cup semi-finals

St Cuthbert Wanderers have their eye on cup glory after making it through to the semi-finals of the Tweedie Cup.

The Kirkcudbright side have been handed a last-four tie at Creetown after beating Caledonian Braves 7-3 on Saturday.

Boss Jordan Williamson said: “This squad is good enough and performing in a way that they deserve to lift some silverware, but we know nothing is a given.

“We know we need to earn the right to be in semi-finals and final. I’m confident they can continue these performances and reap the rewards they merit.

“We need to earn the right but I’m confident, come May, we will be in finals and lifting some silverware.”

Saturday’s game was switched from Alliance Park to Kirkcudbright but had to be delayed by an hour after referee Stephen Foggin went to the original venue.

That didn’t disrupt Saints too much as they took a comfortable win, Scott Ballantyne starting and finishing the scoring with Owen Hall, Russell Williamson and Luke Currie also on the scoresheet, with Dale Milligan bagging a brace.

The Saints boss said: “I thought the boys handled the reset and delay really well. It could have been quite easy for them to go through the motions after being delayed for so long but they did well.

“Right from the off you could tell the boys were going to put in a performance and be as dominant as they were. They had a lot of possession, created a lot of opportunities and scored some really good goals.

“We maybe conceded one or two we shouldn’t have and we could have defended a little bit better and it was disappointing to concede late.

“But we were getting goals from all over the park – midfielders were popping up with goals, they weren’t just leaving it to the forwards.”

Williamson is hoping that continues as he takes the side to Moffat to face Upper Annandale on Saturday.

The Kirkcudbright side are in a strong position at the top of the South of Scotland League, enjoying a nine-point lead over Threave Rovers with just six games to go.

But the gaffer, who will welcome skipper Ross Hunter back from suspension this weekend, said: “It’s no different to the previous three games we’ve played in 2022. They have taken points off of Threave and Moffat is always a tough place to go.

“We’ve came up against stuffy opponents that are hard to break down, with teams that hit us on the counter.

“We have come up against some challenging surfaces but we know this group of players can handle what’s put in front of them in terms of opposition, styles of play and the surface. We need to be in a position where we can adapt to what we come up against, pick up another three points and tick another one off as we get closer to the end of
April.”
