St Cuthbert Wanderers defeat Lochmaben to end four game losing run

St Cuthbert Wanderers ended their losing a run with a 2-0 victory at Lochmaben on Saturday.

The Kirkcudbright side went into the game on the back of four successive defeats and hadn’t tasted success since beating Dumfries YMCA on the opening day of the season.

But second half goals from Ross Hunter and on-loan Dalbeattie Star player Corey Thomson provided a welcome three points.

Boss Jordan Williamson said: “It was good to see us perform as a team.

“We went through a game plan with them and they did exactly as they were asked.

“The squad is still fairly fresh and a lot of the players are getting to know each other and how they play so on Saturday we stripped it back to basics.

“The squad is now starting to gel and hopefully that will continue over the next few weeks.”

Saints have no game this weekend but will play a Queen of the South select at St Mary’s Park on Tuesday to mark the club’s 140th anniversary.

Kick-off is 7.30pm, entry is free and former players will be made most welcome.

Williamson added: “We got three points, kept a clean sheet and won 2-0 and now we don’t have a game for two weeks. It’s frustrating but that’s how the league works.

“We’ll have them in for training on Saturday and then we have a friendly against a Queens select on Tuesday night.”

On Sunday, August 25, the club has a charity match featuring former Rangers and Celtic players including Frank McAvennie, Bobby Petta and Iain Ferguson.

The game kicks off at 3pm and is being held to raise money to support mental health.
