St Cuthbert Wanderers boss praises "steel and desire" after win over Abbey Vale

St Cuthbert Wanderers boss Jordan Williamson says his team found their “steel and desire” to beat Abbey Vale on Saturday.

The Kirkcudbright side had won just twice in the league all season but Greig Lawrie’s goal saw them end the league leaders’ unbeaten start to the campaign.

Williamson said his players were “buzzing” after the game and hopes it proves to be the start of a good run for the team.

He said: “I think we had that steel and desire that has been missing in the last few games and they have put down a marker to the rest of the league that we mean business.

“We changed how we played as we knew if we had tried to go toe for toe with them we probably wouldn’t have got anything out of the game. We came up with a game plan and a system to nullify the danger. We knew we would maybe only create three or four chances and we had to be clinical enough to take them.

“We also knew we were going to have to ride our luck. They had some good chances to score and at 1-0 it was backs to the wall. The boys defended well and our keeper has pulled off a superb double save.

“I knew what the players are capable of. They are a quality team, they are all really good individual players but it was maybe that steel, desire and grit that has been missing in the last few games.

“In the past four games, we have been up in all four and Saturday they showed that passion and desire to get the three points.”

The only downside for Saints is that they will have to wait a while to build on their win.

They were due to face Dumfries YMCA this weekend but their opponents have withdrawn from the league, meaning the Saints have no game until they face Lochmaben on Friday, November 15.

However, the manager pointed out: “If we look back, we beat Lochmaben 2-0 and then had a week off.

“The good thing was the following game we played Wigtown and beat them 5-0 so I hope we’ll do the same.”
