St Cuthbert Wanderers boss hopes to provide platform for new signings to fall back in love with football

Jordan Williamson hopes St Cuthbert Wanderers will allow his new signings to fall back in love with football.

The St Mary’s Park gaffer has recruited former Aberdeen and Motherwell youngster Greg Pollock and defender Cameron Taylor who has been on the books of Livingston, Falkirk and Huddersfield Town.

More signings are set to follow in the coming weeks as Williamson and his coaching team shape their squad for the new South of Scotland League season.

Williamson said: “I think they are two players who have maybe fallen out of love with the game because of the way they have been handled at previous clubs.

“They can see the coaching structure we have and the detail that we go into with our preparation. That is what they are used to and that is why they have come here. Hopefully this is where they can fall back in love with people.

“Last season we came in quite late, our hands were tied and the players we had deserve credit for what they’ve done.

“This year is our first transfer window, if you like. Myself and Ross Hyslop have been elsewhere and have broader horizons and contacts. Ross has contacts at Motherwell and I have contacts at Airdrie and that’s why we’ve been able to bring these two in.

“The average age last season was 21 and we’re looking to bring in some more experienced players but also ones who can still develop.

“Success won’t necessarily be measured in trophies, it’s also measured in player development and if players step up to the Lowland League or even someone like Annan it will show we’re moving in the right way.”

Williamson has also brought Luke McMurtrie back to the club after he moved back to the area following the end of his studies.

The club has also revealed that captain Ross Hunter, striker Dale Milligan, Elliott Harris, Kyle Braid, Owen Hall and midfielders Russell Williamson and Campbell Black have signed on for another season.

But Lloyd Pipe has returned to Dalbeattie Star following the end of his loan spell while Kyle McDonald, Matthew McColm, Darren Cassidy and Arthur McAdam have all moved on.

Williamsons said: “We have kept 100 per cent of the players that were on our retained list. Last season we finished ninth and to be able to keep 100 per cent of the players says a lot about what we are trying to do as a club.

“We had given players individual programmes to work through during lockdown and tested them but we’ve given them some down time just now.

“People say we go into too much detail for this level and things won’t work but I don’t think you can go into too much detail.”
