St Cuthbert Wanderers aim to get 2021 off to winning start against Abbey Vale

St Cuthbert Wanderers are aiming to get 2021 off to a winning start on Saturday.

The Kirkcudbright side welcome Abbey Vale to St Mary’s Park and gaffer Jordan Williamson knows things will be tough against a team who have already beaten Threave Rovers and drawn with leaders Stranraer this term.

He said: “You know at the start of the season whenever you play one of the top five teams you need to be at the races to pick up maximum points. I think they’ll probably admit themselves they’ve probably had too much of a mixed bag to be consistent enough.

“I think they’ll be looking to come to places like us and Meadow Park to try to make up for the points they have dropped to put themselves back in contention. We know they are going to come and be a tough challenge.”

There were no games over the festive period, while some teams were unable to train due to facilities being shut or grass pitches being frozen.

But the 3G pitch at St Mary’s meant Saints could continue training.

Williamson said: “We’re lucky that we’ve got our own facility. The ice caused havoc on one day and we weren’t able to train but again it highlights the importance of the GPS. It came in handy to make sure the boys have been ticking over at home.

“We kept going all the way through with our preparation to make sure we didn’t lose any fitness over Christmas. We’re looking forward to getting back in and starting off the New Year with what would be a hard three points to pick up but three points we’re fully expecting to collect.”
