St Brendan's College confirms coronavirus case

A student at a large sixth form college in Bristol has tested positive for coronavirus.

Bristol Live understands St Brendan's College in Brislington, which teaches more than 1,700 students, wrote to parents about the case yesterday (Wednesday, September 23).

A notice on the college's website states: "We have notified staff, parents and students of a confirmed case of Covid-19 at St Brendan’s College.

"Student and staff safety is of paramount importance to us.

"We have stringently followed government guidelines and are working closely with the Public Health team and the college remains open."

The college, which has a Catholic ethos, is based off Broomhill Road.

It has implemented several measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including a requirement for all students to wear face coverings in communal spaces and remote learning sessions.

A parent of one student said she felt the college had "kept this [case] very quiet" and claimed parents had not been informed which year group or bubble the infected student was in.

Principal Marian Curran told Bristol Live: "An email has been sent to all students/parents confirming the case and for those needing to self-isolate, they have been personally emailed and contacted.

"As a post-16 provider we have been working with different bubbles, not just year groups.

"We are advised by the Department of Education who work with us on a risk assessment when a case occurs within the setting.

"They help us establish who may be at risk and we ask them to self-isolate.

"We do not release any further information as we have a duty to protect the individuals confidentiality."

At least 20 schools in and around Bristol have confirmed cases since the start of term, and hundreds of pupils are having to self-isolate as a precaution.
