St Asaph gin bar opens after HSBC funding support for pub boss

A pub owner purchased a second site after securing a five-figure finance package from HSBC UK, expanding his business portfolio with a new gin bar.

Alun Jones owned the The Mason’s Arms in Denbigh but aspired to open a specialist gin bar.

This saw him and partner Mannon Thomas approach HSBC for support to purchase and renovate St Asaph’s historic former Alms Houses building, which was built in 1686.

They have turned it into The Barrow - which offers over 80 different types of gin - including local brands like Pant y Foel from Saron, Denbigh, Four Feathers from Rhuallt, and Cariad Gin from Lixwm.

It has seen four new jobs created which should increase now that bookings are being taken for functions.

Alun said: “With one established bar under my belt, we were excited at the prospect of opening a second bar which specialises in the country’s best gins, spirits and organic wines, giving locals a nice place to unwind with a great selection of quality drinks.”

Martin Lyons, HSBC UK’s business banking area director for North Wales, said: “Alun has always been very passionate about gin and has worked hard to grow his portfolio so we’re delighted to have supported him purchase and set up The Barrow. It’s great to see him fulfil his ambition as a business owner and we look forward to seeing the gin bar flourish.”
