St Annes: Why families love this tucked away Bristol suburb

St Annes is a small suburb nestled next to Brislington which has become increasingly popular for families looking for a close community feel. It’s not far from the city centre but with plenty of green spaces, it has an almost village feel.

The area is well known for St Anne’s Park which is at the heart of the suburb with a play area for children while St Anne’s Wood is a beautiful hidden area of Brislington. It’s a great place to take dogs for a walk and leads down to a stream.

Business owner of The Lock Stock log cabin salon, Lana Gayle, said she has lived in the area for six years, as well as having her business there. She said: “It’s a really nice community and everyone looks after each other.

“It’s quick to get to Temple Meads and there’s lots of green spaces with walks. We have the woodlands and a river. We also have Abbie’s Cafe where everyone gets together and it really has the best breakfast in Bristol,” she said.

Another business owner, Mr Patel who owns a small grocery cafe has lived and run his business in the suburb for over 18 years. He said there was hardly any crime and the area had attracted a lot of young families.

But he added: “There has been more movement in and out of the area in the last few years. This place is really good for families, but the increased cost of living is affecting everyone.”

Georgia Bate from St Anne’s House which is a hub for social, creative practices, including artists and designers, as well as charitable organisations, said: “There’s lots of green spaces and people are very community minded in St Annes. There’s lots of space for young families but there’s also a good inter-generational mix in the area.”

Walking her dog in St Anne’s Park, Laura said the area is away from the bustle of the city and she can get everything she needs close to home. There is a local Co-Op, a pharmacy, a pub, a number of takeaways and two schools in the area.

With exorbitant Bristol house prices in mind, St Annes is more affordable for families looking for modest homes or first time buyers with a number of properties on Rightmove in the £250,000 price range. From £300,000 plus there are some lovely homes on offer in the area.

Rightmove said properties in St Annes had an overall average price of £279,960 over the last year. The majority of sales in St Annes during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £207,983.

Terraced properties sold for an average of £318,908, with semi-detached properties fetching £335,500. Overall, sold prices in St Annes over the last year were 11% up on the previous year and 18% up on the 2020 peak of £237,426.
