St Ann's bingo hall to be demolished in April ahead of development into student flats

A popular St Ann's bingo hall is set to be demolished after plans were revealed to potentially replace it with student flats.

Gala Bingo, built in a former ballroom and meeting hall in St Ann's Well Road, closed its doors for the final time on January 31.

The building is now boarded up and a notice has been placed outside saying demolition of the site is proposed for April 10.

Staff at the site were offered a transfer to the Gala Bingo club in Top Valley.

In January, Nottinghamshire Live reported BSP Holdings, advised by Savills, said it acquired the former site from Buzz Group Ltd for an undisclosed sum.

Subject to planning permission, the property development and investment company aim to redevelop the site into a "new residential/student scheme."

Passers-by said the decision to demolish the building and turn it into residential space was "a big shame for the community".

Sarah Adams, 31, of St Ann's said: "It's a shame it's gone. It was a popular place for people to head down and speak to others and socialise.

"It just seems really predictable to turn it into student housing or flats. I think we have enough of it in the city. It would be better to see something put in for the community to enjoy, like a new centre."

Gail Hicks, 55, and also of St Ann's said: "I might sound hypocritical as I never used the bingo hall but it's a shame it's just going to be more houses. It's a big spot so could be a really nice restaurant or pub."

Graeme Underwood, 29, of the city centre added: "I'm not about giving student flats a hard time. If done right they're good for the city. This seems like a sound economic choice in terms of bingo halls being quite old fashioned. A lot of people play online now.

"I understand the argument about the community losing out which is a shame but I'm not against knocking it down for residential use."

Adam Watson, investment director at BSP Holdings , said: "This is an exciting project for BSP Holdings.

"We have the opportunity to create a landmark development in Nottingham city centre. This acquisition shows our confidence in the market and represents a multi-million pound investment in the regeneration of Nottingham."
