St Andrew's Hospice car raffle raises £38,500 for Airdrie charity

Salsburgh resident Ben McKenna is enjoying being behind the wheel of his brand new car – after winning the top prize in the annual St Andrew’s Hospice grand raffle.

He collected his Kia Picanto at the Henderson Street charity this week, as hospice officials announced that this year’s fundraiser collected £38,500 for their vital work.

Ben told how he was in disbelief when he was first told that he had won the new set of wheels, saying: “I actually thought it was a prank when I received the phone call!

“I took part in the raffle to support the hospice and couldn’t believe I actually won the car; I’m over the moon to win.

“St Andrew’s means a lot to me and my family and I always do whatever I can to help and support the cause because of the amazing care they provide for patients and their families, both in the hospice and out in the community.

“Times have been very challenging for the hospice this year and it’s great that as well as winning a brand new car, I was able to with with raising funds to help give care to people when they need it most.”

Ben’s top prize was donated by Arnold Clark, and the lucky winner collected the keys from car firm production genius Ross Burnett, watched by hospice chief executive Bruce High, depute head fundraiser Louise O’Donnell, legacy and trust manager Lorna McCafferty and supporters Ann and Barrie Binks.

Steven Perrins of Blantyre won the second prize of £500, and Anne Harris of Coatbridge won the third prize of £250.

Arnold Clark chief executive Eddie Hawthorne said: “The fantastic care and service St Andrew's Hospice delivers to the people and communities of Lanarkshire is so important, and we’re really proud to be able to play our part in helping them out at this time.

“Congratulations to Ben, and we hope he loves driving his new car!”

Hospice fundraiser Louise O’Donnell said: “We are excited that the grand car raffle raised £38,500 for patient care – these funds are crucial to St Andrew’s, especially during these challenging times.

“We'd like to thank everyone for showing their support by buying tickets and Arnold Clark for their support with the car, which is much appreciated.

“It's thanks to the many kind-hearted people who buy raffle tickets, purchase goods in our shops, leave gifts in their wills and take part in our events that the hospice is able to continue providing care and comfort to the people of Lanarkshire at a time when they need it most.”
