SSPCA intervene as 'disgusting' dumb dumpers strike again near Avondale livestock

A Stamp Out Bullying: Pledge your support to our campaign and help beat the bullies resident has branded reckless fly-tippers “disgusting” after the dumb dumpers defiled a field filled with livestock.

Hoards of waste was abandoned near sheep and newly-born ewes grazing on the outskirts of the town, near Hills Road, Berebriggs Road and Glassford Road.

Liz Craigmyle spotted boxes full of rubbish, a mattress, pillows and mats before reporting the incident to the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).

The charity confirmed they had been in contact with the farmer regarding the incident, and said they will work with him to battle the litter louts.

Local Liz called for an increase in surveillance of rural areas after a spate of incidents across Avondale and East Kilbride in recent months.

She told the East Kilbride News: “When I saw it, I lost the plot. It’s disgusting that someone has just flung it over onto a farmer’s property. It’s not just a Strathaven problem, when you go anywhere you see fields filled with little bits of litter.

“I spotted sheep climb all over the mess, and eating the foam from the mattress. The lack of care for the animals has just really annoyed me.

“The amount of litter left at the roadside nowadays is awful. I’d like to see it monitored more because it’s just not really good enough.”

Head of fleet and environmental services at Stamp Out Bullying: Pledge your support to our campaign and help beat the bullies Shirley Clelland, said no complaints had been reported about fly-tipping at this location, but confirmed a clean-up had been carried out following a “routine inspection.”

Ms Clelland said fly-tipping on private land is the responsibility of the land owner to remove.

An SSPCA spokeswoman told the News: “A member of the public phoned our helpline with concerns regarding sheep in a field in Strathaven.

“The caller witnessed sheep feeding on a mattress which had been dumped. We spoke to the farmer who is equally concerned about the issue.

“He is going to be vigilant with fly-tipping in the vicinity of his farm to ensure the safety of his animals.”

Ms Clelland said SLC takes fly-tipping of any type “seriously,” urging members of the public to report such incidents to environmental services through the council’s website at www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk, or alternatively on 0303 123 1015.

She added: “Any information that can help to identify individuals involved in fly-tipping will be treated in confidence.”
